Our Boho Nursery Story
Our story with preparing for a nursery was a little different than the typical one. During the time many parents are piecing together their baby’s nursery, my husband and I were packing boxes and preparing to move out of our 2-bedroom apartment with our two dogs. Not only that, but we were heading across the country to buy our first home!
Although this was an exciting time for us, it was also really stressful and chaotic. As you can imagine, the nursery was put on the back burner. Instead, we looked for cheap, portable easy solutions to get us by temporarily during the big change. Three month’s after our first baby was born, we said good bye to our apartment in Virginia and set off to Nevada!
Needless to say, the nursery took a while to get set-up. Since Remi was sleeping in our bedroom in a bassinet indefinitely, I wasn’t in that big of a rush. So I took my time to consider different nursery styles and to shop around. Eventually we settled in enough after the big move. Slowly but surely, I was to finally able to start the nursery.

A Modern Boho Nursery
Going into nursery planning, I knew two things—1) I wanted to reuse the white baby drawer I had randomly bought for my husband and I when we lived in D.C. (it was cheap, so I bought it for us even though we had no babies at the time!), and 2) I wanted it to feel bright, open, and inviting. If you know me, you probably also know that I really love greenery, so that was a must!

Where I found our Boho Nursery Items
I spent months exploring different stores and gathering ideas. Some of the big furniture were items we already had, such as the Delta nursery dresser drawer and our tall drawer chest from Ikea (Hemnes 5-drawer chest which I don’t think they sell anymore). To get the nursery drawer to match the more rustic look of the Ikea Hemnes chest, I switched out the white knobs on the Delta dresser with black ones. I purchased a lot of the decor from stores like Ross, Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, Kohl’s, At Home (now gone), Buy Buy Baby clearance section (back when they had the storefront in Las Vegas still open), and Target. I also bought items from Amazon, and purchased the wall art from Etsy. I found the wooden book shelf display and shelved side table from Wayfair.
Some of the items I have shared links to at the bottom of the post if you like them as well!

Preparing your nursery
Before you even get started with your nursery (whether it’s a boho nursery or other theme), it’s a good idea to go over all the basics of how to set-up your nursery. You can read my Guide to Planning Your Nursery post to get started on this. Once you have a general idea of how to best set-up your nursery, it will be much easier to plan for your boho nursery!

Boho Nursery Tips & Ideas
If you are wanting a boho nursery theme, following these simple suggestions will help you achieve that cozy, boho look you are going for!
1. Choose earthy, neutral color tones
Your boho nursery color scheme will have base colors and accent colors.
For base colors, choose soft white, cream, beige, tan, and brown.
For accent colors, choose muted colors like sage green, dusty rose, and mustard yellow.
2. Look for items made from natural materials
Natural materials include wood, basket weave, rattan, jute, cotton, and linen. These examples are not only natural but also have an earthy quality to them.
3. Add layers and textures
You will want to add depth and relaxed comfort using layers and textures. Think throws, tassels, woven materials, macramé, fringe, etc.
4. Sprinkle in Some Greenery
Whether you decide to go faux or choose real plants, plants and greenery will really add to the natural, earthy look of your boho nursery.
5. Opt for Simple, Classic or Vintage Furniture
Mid-century Modern and Vintage styles are great option for boho nursery furniture. Soft neutral tones and and woody colors are great for boho furniture.
